Marcos Chirivente grows coffee in the Pangoa district of Peru’s Junín region, which is positioned at the Andean foothills at the western edge of the Amazon rainforest. This diverse geographical zone has highland influences while also experiencing lowland tropical weather. Marcos' farm is named 'Fundo Quintimari' as a nod to his family. It's situated at an elevation of 1,540 masl and spans 12 hectares - making it a medium sized farm in the context of the area.

Originally from the native community of Cachingarani, Marcos and his family belong to the Nomatsigenga ethnic group. The Nomatsigenga are an indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon, primarily settled in the central jungles of Junín and Pasco along the Pangoa, Ene, and Tambo river basins. They speak Nomatsigenga, an Arawakan language that remains a vital marker of their identity. This community has faced quite a bit of upheaval and adversity, in the 1980s the Shining Path guerrilla group created socio-political upheaval and terrorized many civilians. Around 1991 many families had to flee and seek refuge in larger cities because the Shining Path had taken control of most of central and southern Peru. While the region has stabilized and families have returned, the people now face the loss of their ancestral lands due to environmental degradation. Even in the face of these threats the community has continued to preserve their language, culture, and territorial rights.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on Marcos' gesha variety (in fact, this was the full offering and there are no other roasters in the US that are roasting coffee from this farm right now). The Gesha variety is said to have originated in Ethiopia (specifically Gesha Village) then travelled to Central America in 1953. The trees are known to be low yielding and difficult to cultivate, but the unique floral and tea-like features characterizing this variety make it highly popular and adored. Whether you call it Gesha or Geisha

In this washed expression, the variety’s character shows clearly: herbal aromatics lead with lemongrass and soft cocoa carefully punctuating the cup. The body is light and structured, with a tea-like texture that carries through a clean, composed finish.

This is an elegant, well-structured Gesha made for those who love subtlety in their cup.
