Herbal, earthy, chocolate and silky smooth. Peruvian coffees are back!
Peru is one of those countries that we've tried to buy from a few times but either the quality hasn't held up or we just left it too long to secure the lot before it was scooped up by another coffee roaster.
For that reason, this is our first release from Peru.
If you don't know yet, Peruvian coffee is the best. It takes all of the qualities of South American coffee like caramelized sweetness and notes of cocoa but has this unique herbal flavor that is always loudest when the coffee is hot. The herbaceousness is likely due to the high presence of the Typica variety which is always especially floral.
La Danta is a blend of coffees produced along the highlands of San Ignacio, Cajamarca. At this particular collection point our importing partner Caravela separates deliveries from around 70 local producers who contribute to the La Danta lot.
The name comes from the Andean Tapir, also known as mountain Danta, also known in Quechua as "sacha huagra". The Andean tapir, an endangered herbivore, is commonly found roaming the Andes mountain range, especially in northern Cajamarca.
In the cup we get all of those herbal notes up front but with a zippy, orange acidity. As it cools you can expect a little earthiness that will shift to notes of baking chocolate and elevate that silky body. Peruvian coffees are really cool but there are always too few available so hop on this one quick because you won't see fresh ones again until around Nov/Dec 2023.
